Dear Customers,

This is advanced notice that on the 18th of January 2008 we will be disabling the email feature “default address” from the cPanel control panel.
 
Why are you removing this feature?

It’s an old cPanel tool that’s been in operation for many years, with the increase of spam across the internet it leaves mailservers vulnerable to mail floods which can effect service performance and fill up your mailboxes with junk email.

It allows any email sent to your domain into your chosen default address inbox, spammers don’t often know your real email addresses so they use scripts emailing anything@yourdomain.com sending hundreds and even thousands of emails hoping one will get through to you, with the default address enabled you’re going to get them all. If your email inbox becomes full, you’re not going to be able to receive incoming email until you clear it out, this can result in the loss of important emails.

What do I need to do?

All you need to do is ensure that you have created your email accounts/forwarders for the addresses that you use. On the 18th of January we will set all default addresses to “:fail:” resulting in any email sent to an email address that doesn’t exist failing.
